Chain Reaction Press has elected to suspend manuscript submissions for a four-month period beginning April 15, 2008. Part of this decision is a likely re-visioning of the mission and scope of the press. But more about that later! Please note that currently submitted manuscripts will be read and given our full attention.

Submission Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in submitting your work to Chain Reaction Press. We publish science fiction and fantasy novels. The minimum word count for submissions is 75,000. For science fiction we accept stories where technology based on current theories is vital to the story as well as works that blend fact and fantasy. Great storytelling has a way of breaking old stereotypes and we welcome new authors and seasoned professionals trying something new.

Chain Reaction Press is very interested in books that can combine well-realized characters, strongly conceived worlds, exciting plots, and reflections on issues facing humanity. Whether it be freedom versus constraint, racism, the concentration of wealth in a few hands, or the examination of climate change, Chain Reaction Press welcomes thoughtful considerations of complex issues.

We are not currently accepting short stories, novellas, or poetry. (Our sister imprint, Sofa Ink, has a quarterly magazine that does accept science fiction and fantasy short stories and poetry.)

We do accept manuscripts from unpublished novelists and are always looking for new talent. A literary agent is not required for submissions. No simultaneous submissions please.

Please send the entire manuscript. No handwritten submissions. Send your best work and seriously consider having a professional editor review your manuscript.

Manuscript Submission Detail

Put your name, address, phone number, and number of words in the work in the upper right corner of the first page of your manuscript.

• Letter-quality, computer-generated or typewritten work only
• Clear photocopies are acceptable
• Manuscript must be 8.5 x 11 inches on good white paper
• Double-spaced text
• 1-inch margins all around
• No printing on reverse sides of pages
• Please put title of novel and page number on top of each page
• Do NOT bind manuscripts; leave unbound
• A single page cover letter

Manuscript Returns

Please include a postage-paid (First or Fourth Class) envelope if you want us to return your work if we decide not to publish it. We will not return manuscripts unless a proper self-addressed and postage-paid envelope has been included.

Turnaround Time

Expect three to six months for our editors to review your submission.
